The pianists represented in this recording are members of Dan Knight’s “musical family.” These are the “giants” of whom he is a descendant. In “Homage,” Knight honors each of these icons of jazz piano in his own compositions, written and performed in the individual style and technique of each of these great pianists. |

HOMAGE is not a project, concert or recording. For me, it’s a way of life.
My dedication to the people represented here, and to their music, is profound and lifelong.
Everything I am now is possible only because of these people who came before me.
This project is a way of paying tribute to them, not by copying or transcribing what they did on any given song — note for note — but by attempting to capture the “essence” of their unique personal styles in an original composition.
If copying the work of these icons, note for note, is the only way to pay true homage to them, then we as jazz musicians have become as the classical tradition is. We have simply traded our “canon” of works for theirs.
I believe “true” homage lies in our own abilities as musicians to carry our musical ancestors with us, in our hearts. In this way, whatever we do, if we do it from the heart, we can do no other but bring part of them along with us. Always.
We hold them, immortal, in that part of us which is immortal as well.
That, to me, is true homage.
